Overview of Project
The Tampa Hillsborough County Expressway Authority (THEA) began a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) study in May 2009 that will consider improvement options on the Selmon Expressway downtown viaducts in Hillsborough County, FL. A map detailing the limits of the project is shown below. The project extends from Florida Avenue to South 22nd Street, a distance of approximately 1.7 miles.
THEA is conducting this PD&E study to identify and analyze various alternative design concepts to meet the future traffic needs on the Selmon Expressway downtown viaducts. This study also serves to evaluate the environmental effects of the alternatives. It is anticipated that widening the existing structures to the inside to provide a divided 6-lane roadway will be the preferred alternative. The build alternative will be within existing expressway right-of-way. Also included in this project is the proposed re-decking of an approximately one mile segment of the existing viaduct structure located within the project area. The proposed re-decking will extend from Florida Avenue to North 12th Street. The project area is within Tampa city limits.
