Reversible Express Lanes Slip Ramps: Streamlined Commutes, Now Open!

During the research phase of the East Selmon Project Development and Environment (PD&E) study, THEA identified an opportunity to improve service levels for drivers on the Selmon Expressway THEA with the opening of new East Selmon slip ramps, offering an upgraded commuting experience for Tampa Bay residents. These slip ramps provide convenient access points, allowing you to seamlessly enter the Reversible Express Lanes (REL) near I-75 and exit the REL near IKEA. From there, you can effortlessly continue your journey on the local lanes of the Selmon Expressway, heading towards your western destinations. There is no additional toll charge to access express travel on the REL- the REL is the same rate as the local Selmon lanes.

Addressing a critical need, the project has significantly reduced congestion on the Selmon Expressway by better distributing drivers across both upper and lower decks, alleviating traffic at critical intersections like US 301, 78th Street, and the I-4 Connector.

A key achievement is the decrease in congestion at the REL Terminus at Twiggs Street and Meridian Parkway, with data showing over 300 fewer vehicles exiting during peak morning rush hour*. This traffic reduction has eased the burden on downtown streets, particularly near a local elementary school, and improved neighborhood road conditions, cutting commuter traffic feeding into Bayshore Boulevard. The result is a smoother, less stressful morning commute, enhancing the overall commuter experience and reducing travel times.

Construction for the slip ramps began in January 2022 and was completed in the fall of 2023, ahead of schedule. Both the on-ramp near I-75 and the off-ramp just past the I-4 connector interchange near IKEA are open and operational.

We are delighted to bring these enhancements to the Tampa Bay region. At THEA, we're committed to advancing transportation solutions and ensuring an improved daily commute for Tampa Bay residents. For more information on how to access the slip ramps, please watch the brief video below.
