Celebrating 8 Years of the Deputy Kotfila Memorial Dog Park

This June marks eight years since the opening of the Deputy Kotfila Memorial Dog Park—a shaded, pet-friendly retreat beneath the Selmon Expressway along the Selmon Greenway. Since 2017, it’s become a favorite downtown destination and a meaningful tribute to a local hero.

Remembering Deputy Kotfila

The park honors Hillsborough County Deputy John Kotfila, Jr., who tragically lost his life in 2016 protecting others from a wrong-way driver on the Selmon Expressway. Inspired by his bond with his German Shepherd, Dexter, THEA dedicated this space in his name to celebrate both his service and his love of dogs.

Adjacent to Bell Channelside Apartments, the park includes:

  • Canine turf for durability and safety
  • Separate play areas for small and large dogs
  • Water fountains with pet bowls
  • Comfortable seating for owners

Every detail is intended to create a welcoming, safe place for pets and people to enjoy.

Enhancing Public Space

Part of the Selmon Greenway, the dog park is one of many ways THEA is reimagining infrastructure to support walkability, sustainability, and community life. This space is a reminder that thoughtful urban design benefits everyone, including our four-legged friends.
