In partnership with the Florida Legislature, the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) proudly named the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway to honor one of Tampa Bay’s most respected leaders—both on and off the field. While THEA initiated and championed the naming, the designation was formally approved through the state legislative process, reflecting the widespread community support and admiration for Mr. Selmon’s legacy.
To further carry forward his spirit of mentorship and service, THEA established the Selmon STEM Partnership Program. Mr. Selmon was deeply involved in mentoring students at the University of South Florida and encouraged THEA to invest in the next generation through expanded opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Since its creation, THEA has fulfilled that promise by providing annual paid internships and scholarships to outstanding USF Engineering students. The program offers hands-on experience to juniors and seniors, immersing them in every aspect of THEA’s work—from urban planning and infrastructure design to collaboration with local and regional partners improving transportation across Tampa Bay.
Through these programs, THEA continues to honor Lee Roy Selmon’s legacy of leadership, mentorship, and commitment to building a better community for future generations.
