THEA Unveils $745 Million Vision to Transform Tampa’s Transportation Future

On May 23, 2025, Breanne Williams with the Tampa Bay Business Journal wrote about THEA’s $745 million investment plan aimed at transforming Tampa’s transportation infrastructure. This comprehensive initiative seeks to enhance connectivity, safety, and community integration across and underneath our system.

Key Highlights of the Investment Plan:

  • Infrastructure Improvements: THEA plans to allocate $686 million to expand the southern portion of the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, while also enhancing underpasses and sidewalks for pedestrians, adding noise walls in residential areas, and constructing a signature bridge.
  • Community-Centric Projects: A significant portion of the investment focuses on creating community assets, such as the Selmon Greenway Master Plan. These projects aim to provide active recreation areas and green spaces that foster community engagement and promote healthier lifestyles.
  • Innovative Design Approaches: Drawing inspiration from successful urban transformations in other cities, THEA’s vision emphasizes redefining the relationship between expressways and neighborhoods. The goal is to create infrastructure that not only facilitates transportation but also enhances the quality of life for residents.

“When they hired me, we were at a time point where we needed to rebuild the expressway,” Slater said. “So, we have projects in the queue, and what we’ve really done over the last couple of years is make sure we’re rebuilding the expressway and the features around it to match where Tampa is going and not where Tampa has been.”

This visionary plan reflects THEA’s commitment to building a more connected, safe, and livable Tampa. By integrating modern infrastructure with community-focused designs, THEA aims to set a new standard for urban development in the region.
