Navigating Tampa Bay: Your Guide to Tolls and SunPass® for Summer Travel

Exploring our beautiful state means riding Florida’s toll roads, like THEA’s Selmon Expressway. For new residents or visitors, understanding tolls – and how to save money – is key to a smooth travel experience.

Here’s your guide to tolls, SunPass®, and avoiding extra fees.

What is SunPass®? Your Toll Road Key

SunPass® is Florida’s prepaid toll program, offering the most convenient and cost-effective way to pay tolls. It’s your express lane pass, providing discounted rates statewide.

How it works: Purchase a small transponder (sticker or portable device) for your windshield. As you drive through toll plazas, the transponder is read, and the toll automatically deducts from your prepaid SunPass® account. No stopping, no fumbling for cash.

SunPass®: Your Summer Travel Advantage

  1. Cost Savings: SunPass® users pay lower toll rates than cash or Toll-by-Plate users. Savings add up quickly on road trips.
  2. Convenience: Breeze through designated lanes, saving time and reducing stress, especially during peak travel.
  3. Statewide Coverage: Your SunPass® works on all Florida toll roads and most toll bridges, including all THEA facilities like the Selmon Expressway.
  4. No Hidden Fees: Avoid the administrative fees associated with Toll-by-Plate.

Understanding Toll-by-Plate:

Without a SunPass® or cash payment at a toll plaza, you’ll still use toll roads. The system captures your license plate image for Toll-by-Plate.

How it works: The registered vehicle owner receives an invoice in the mail for tolls, plus an administrative fee (typically $2.50 per invoice). For multiple tolls, you’ll get one invoice with a single fee. This is less cost-effective for frequent users.

Important: If using Toll-by-Plate, ensure your vehicle’s registration address is current to receive invoices and avoid penalties.

Avoiding Toll-by-Plate Fees: Best Options

  • Get a SunPass®! It’s the best way.
    • Where to Buy: Purchase transponders online at SunPass®.com, or at Publix, CVS, Walgreens, and AAA. The SunPass® Mini is affordable and easy to set up.
    • Activating: Activate online or by phone, load an initial amount, and you’re ready!
  • Pay with Cash (Limited Availability): Some older toll plazas accept cash. However, many newer expressways and specific Selmon ramps use “All-Electronic Tolling,” meaning no cash. Relying on cash can lead to missed tolls.

Drive Smarter on the Selmon Expressway

The Selmon Expressway is vital for navigating Tampa Bay, connecting you across the region. A SunPass® makes your journey smoother and more affordable, whether commuting or exploring.

Before your summer adventures, get SunPass® ready. It’s a small step for a big difference in enjoying Tampa Bay and Florida.
