THEA’s 13 Days of Halloween Safety Tips

As summer comes to an end, and the air cools, you know what that means—it’s time for costumes, candy, and community fun! But with all the excitement of Halloween, it’s also a time to be extra mindful of safety on our roads. At THEA, we’re committed to enriching lives by connecting communities, and that includes keeping everyone safe, whether you’re behind the wheel or trick-or-treating on foot.

We’ve put together a guide with essential tips for a safe and happy Halloween, which we’ll be sharing in our 13 Days of Halloween Safety series.

Tips for Drivers:

  • Slow Down: Be extra cautious in residential neighborhoods where kids are likely to be out and about.
  • Clear Your Windows: Ensure your windshield and windows are clean and free of any fog for maximum visibility.
  • Watch for Bicyclists: Be on the lookout for bicyclists who may also be on the road for Halloween festivities.
  • Check Your Surroundings: Be aware of children darting out from behind parked cars or from between houses.
  • Avoid Distractions: Keep your phone out of reach and focus your full attention on the road.

Tips for Pedestrians:

  • See and Be Seen: Wear bright colors or add reflective tape to costumes so you’re easily visible to drivers, especially after dark.
  • Look Both Ways: Always look left, right, and left again before crossing any street, even if you’re in a crosswalk.
  • Cross at the Corner: Use designated crosswalks and intersections whenever possible.
  • Walk in a Group: Stay with a group of friends or family, especially for younger kids.
  • Put Down the Phone: Stay alert by avoiding the use of your phone while walking or crossing the street.
  • Know Your Route: Plan a trick-or-treating route in a familiar neighborhood with well-lit streets.
  • Walk on the Sidewalk: If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.
  • Glow Up!: Use glow sticks or flashlights to increase your visibility.

This Halloween, let’s work together to make our community safer for everyone. From all of us at THEA, have a spooktacular and safe celebration!
