Transforming the Future: Celebrating National Engineers Week at THEA

As we observe National Engineers Week (February 22–28, 2026), the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) is happy to celebrate the engineers whose expertise keeps our region moving. This year’s theme, “Transform Your Future,” reflects our commitment to using innovative engineering to create a safer, more connected Tampa Bay.

Engineering Safety and Innovation

At THEA, engineering is at the core of our mission. By prioritizing both the structural integrity of vital assets and the integration of advanced smart city technologies, our team ensures a safe, reliable, and efficient experience for our drivers. This commitment to engineering innovation allows THEA to maintain high standards of infrastructure performance while proactively addressing the region’s long-term mobility needs.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Beyond maintaining today’s infrastructure, THEA is dedicated to supporting the engineers of tomorrow. A prime example of this effort is our annual USF-SE Bridge Building Competition, hosted in partnership with the University of South Florida College of Engineering.

Each year, middle and high school students from across the Tampa Bay area compete to design and build the most efficient bridges. The event challenges students to apply physics and structural design principles in a high-stakes environment where bridges are tested to the point of failure.

The competition is a vital component of the Selmon STEM Internship Program. Created in honor of the late Lee Roy Selmon, this program provides students with mentorship and professional pathways into STEM careers.

Looking Ahead

Engineers are the problem-solvers who turn vision into reality. Whether it is through advanced materials or sustainable infrastructure, THEA remains committed to investing in the people and projects that transform our community’s future.
