Hurricane Season Readiness Underway

As the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season begins, the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority is reinforcing its commitment to public safety and storm resilience with a comprehensive slate of hurricane readiness initiatives already underway.

Ahead of the season, THEA has completed several key infrastructure upgrades, including full roof replacements on all of its facilities and the clearing of drainage ditches along the CSX rail corridor to improve stormwater flow and reduce the risk of flooding. Additionally, staff emergency response training is ongoing, ensuring every team member is prepared to act swiftly and effectively before, during, and after a storm event.

Central to THEA’s hurricane preparedness is the implementation of a new asset maintenance contract, designed to elevate year-round roadway safety while enhancing response capabilities during tropical weather events. This contract – delivered in partnership with Webber – covers all mainline sections of the Selmon Expressway and its connecting infrastructure, from bridges and lighting to stormwater systems and the Selmon Greenway.

The contract features advanced tools like Survey123 for real-time inspections, Robotiz3d ARRES Eye for pavement condition monitoring, and iCone technology to alert motorists of work zones, even during severe weather.

“The safety and well-being of our community are at the core of THEA’s mission,” said Greg Slater, Executive Director/CEO. “This new contract ensures that our roadways and underpasses remain in top condition, utilizing cutting-edge technology and proactive maintenance strategies to enhance the daily commute for Tampa drivers.”

With GPS-enabled service patrols, daily inspections, rapid response repair teams, and a comprehensive emergency management plan, THEA stands ready to respond to emergencies and keep the Selmon Expressway safe, clear, and operational – no matter what the forecast holds.
