Navigating the Spring Surge: Your Guide to a Safe Spring Break on the Selmon Expressway

Spring break is just around the corner, and for many, that means sun, sand, and much-needed relaxation. But before you reach your destination, there’s the journey itself.

At the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA), we see the seasonal shift firsthand. March is consistently our busiest month of the year, bringing extra travelers to the Selmon Expressway. As the gateway to our region’s best attractions, the Selmon Expressway becomes a hub for locals and visitors alike, making it more important than ever to stay alert and prepared behind the wheel.

Whether you’re a daily commuter or a visitor passing through, here is what you need to know to stay safe during the busiest month on the Selmon Expressway.

Why March is Different

In Tampa, March isn’t just about the weather; it’s about the volume. The Selmon Expressway serves as a vital corridor connecting our region. During Spring Break, several factors come together to change the daily driving experience:

  • Higher Transaction Counts: Historically, March sees our highest number of daily drivers.
  • Unfamiliar Drivers: Nearly 30% of Spring Break crashes in Florida involve out-of-state drivers who may be reliant on GPS and prone to sudden lane changes.
  • Event Surges: With Spring Training, festivals, and downtown events, traffic patterns become less predictable than the standard 9-to-5 rush.

Pro-Tips for a Stress-Free Spring Break Drive

  1. Ditch the Distractions

In heavy traffic, a split second is the difference between a close call and a crash.

  • Set your GPS before you leave your driveway.
  • Use hands-free features for music and calls.
  • Keep your eyes up. With more pedestrians and cyclists near downtown exits, staying alert is non-negotiable.

2. Make Sure You and Your Vehicle Are Prepared

Before heading out on a road trip, ensure your vehicle is up to the task.

  • Safety Checklist: Check your tire pressure, verify all exterior lights are working, and ensure your windshield wipers can handle those sudden Florida afternoon showers.
  • Pack an Emergency Kit: Before a long trip, ensure your vehicle has an emergency kit to handle the unexpected. Essential items include a first aid kit, jumper cables, a flashlight with extra batteries, and basic tools for minor repairs. Additionally, packing water, non-perishable snacks, and road flares will keep you safe and prepared should you face a breakdown or a long delay in heavy holiday traffic.
  1. Drive Sober or Get a Lift

We want everyone to enjoy their break, but safety comes first. If your Spring Break plans include a few drinks, please utilize rideshare services or designate a driver. Our Selmon Expressway “Slip Ramps” and downtown exits are high-activity areas where impaired driving is especially dangerous.

Our Commitment to You

At THEA, we are constantly working to make your drive smoother. Our goal is to get you to your destination safely.

During this busy month, be a courteous driver by being patient, staying alert, and looking out for one another.
