Top 5 Traffic Laws Every Teen Driver Should Know

May is Global Youth Traffic Safety Month, making it the perfect time for teen drivers to brush up on essential traffic laws. Understanding and following these rules can help prevent accidents and keep everyone safe on Tampa’s roads. Here are the top five traffic laws that young drivers may not be aware of:

1. No Texting While Driving

Florida law prohibits texting while driving. Teens should always use hands-free options when making calls and avoid distractions to stay focused on the road. Even a quick glance at a phone can lead to a serious accident.

2. Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Restrictions

Florida’s GDL laws limit when and how teens can drive:

  • Learner’s Permit: Must drive with a licensed adult (21+) in the front seat and only between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.
  • Intermediate License (Ages 16-17): Driving hours are restricted unless accompanied by a licensed adult or driving to and from work.
    • 16-year-olds can drive solo between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m
    • 17-year-olds can drive solo between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m.

3. The Move Over Law

If an emergency vehicle, tow truck, or utility vehicle is stopped on the roadside with flashing lights, drivers must move over one lane if possible. If unable to move over, slow down to at least 20 mph below the speed limit to protect roadside workers.

4. Stopping for School Buses

Drivers must stop for a school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign, unless on the opposite side of a divided highway with a raised median. Passing a stopped school bus is illegal and dangerous.

5. No Underage Drinking and Driving

Florida has a zero-tolerance policy for underage drinking and driving. A driver under 21 caught with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.02% or higher will have their license suspended immediately.

Stay Safe and Drive Smart

Following these laws will help keep teen drivers and others on the road safe. THEA encourages all young drivers to be responsible, stay alert, and always make smart choices behind the wheel.
