Tampa, FL. – The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) and THEA CEO Joe Waggoner were honored at Plan Hillsborough’s 36th Annual Planning & Design Awards on Thursday, October 25, 2018.
THEA CEO Joe Waggoner was awarded the Chairman’s Award for outstanding contributions to planning and quality of life in the Tampa Bay community, alongside fellow leaders Mayor Bob Buckhorn and USF System President Dr. Judy Genshaft.
“I am honored to receive the Chairman’s Award,” said THEA CEO Joe Waggoner. “At THEA, our mission has always been how to best serve the community we love – whether that is to make roads safer with the cutting edge technology of the Tampa Connected Vehicle Pilot, or to help shorten commutes as we are doing with the Selmon Extension along Gandy Blvd, or to help attract the best & brightest innovators to the Tampa Bay region as we do every year with the Florida Automated Vehicle Summit. Each project we plan, each road we build begins with our community in mind.”
THEA won the Planning & Design Award of Merit in the Investment Category for its pocket parks along the Selmon Greenway, a 1.7-mile trail under the Selmon Expressway that is mostly in the shade, and that connects many of downtown Tampa’s popular entertainment, educational, and business venues from the Riverwalk to Ybor City.
The first of these pocket parks is named the Deputy John Kotfila, Jr Memorial Dog Park and is built under the shade of the Selmon Expressway, near the Channelside District of Downtown Tampa. The park was built in honor of Hillsborough County Deputy John Robert Kotfila, Jr. who lost his life to a wrong-way driver on the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway and held a strong bond with his dog, Dexter.

Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority Announces Last Call for Connected Vehicle Pilot Volunteers
Tampa, FL. – The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) announced two December deadlines for local participation in the Tampa Connected Vehicle Pilot. December 2nd is the last day to schedule an appointment for equipment installation, with all final installations to be completed no later than December 14th.
In advance of the upcoming deadlines, THEA is extending the appointment window for equipment installations by adding evening appointments on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. The equipment and installation are free of charge, and participants will receive a toll rebate on the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway which can accumulate up to a maximum of $550 when the pilot ends on January 31, 2020.
THEA’s Connected Vehicle Pilot aims to demonstrate the safety, mobility and environmental benefits of connected vehicle technology. Tampa is one of only three locations selected by the U.S. Department of Transportation to take part in the Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Program. The other two locations are New York City and the Wyoming Interstate 80 corridor. THEA’s Tampa project is unique in that it is the only CV pilot that involves local residents driving their own cars.
Connected vehicles can communicate with traffic signals in downtown Tampa and with each other - helping to prevent crashes and keep traffic moving. THEA has already equipped more than 800 participant cars with connected vehicle equipment for the pilot.
“As THEA’s Connected Vehicle Pilot moves into its next phase, the recruitment period is coming to a close,” said THEA Director of Public Affairs & Communications Sue Chrzan. “With only two months remaining, now is the time for local drivers to sign up and take part in a groundbreaking research project that will transform the transportation experience in our community.”
Drivers must meet certain criteria in order to participate. For example, they must be 18 years of age or older, own a car that is a 1996 model or newer, use the Selmon Expressway to commute into downtown, or simply drive in downtown Tampa on a regular basis. Area residents who are interested in participating or want to learn more about the Pilot project are encouraged to take the online prescreening questionnaire at www.TampaCVpilot.com to see if they are eligible.

Tampa, Fla. On November 27th and 28th, 2018 the University of South Florida Center for Urban Transportation (USF CUTR), the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), will host the 6th Annual Florida Automated Vehicles (FAV) Summit in downtown Tampa, Florida.
The FAV Summit assembles nationally-recognized experts and industry leaders to discuss the state of autonomous and connected vehicle technologies, implementation opportunities, and challenges to successfully integrate automated vehicles and the accompanying technologies within existing transportation networks. The 2018 FAV Summit will focus on ACES mobility. ACES is an acronym for the four rising stars of mobility - Automated, Connected, Electric and Shared.
"The world is moving to shared, electric, and self-driving. The implications of this shift will have profound impacts on both government and industry," said State Senator Jeff Brandes (R-St. Petersburg). "The Florida Automated Vehicles Summit provides Florida's policymakers and transportation leaders to interact with experts in this field."
In addition to automated vehicle demonstrations and exhibits, this years Summit will update attendees on the progress of THEAs Connected Vehicle (CV) Pilot, a $17 million U.S. Department of Transportation awarded contract to test and deploy connected vehicle technology in downtown Tampa. As part of the CV Pilot, THEA will be testing applications designed to reduce wrong-way driving incidents and rear-end collisions, increase pedestrian safety, improve traffic flow, prioritize traffic signalization for transit, and reduce incidents of vehicle or pedestrian conflicts with buses and trolleys.
By being among the first cities in the nation to test and deploy automated and ACES mobility technologies, Tampa is addressing transportation challenges with 21st-century solutions, said Joe Waggoner, THEA Executive Director, and CEO.
