THEA’s Commitment to Preparedness for National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, a time dedicated to preparing for any emergency. While the public is reminded to secure their homes and build emergency kits as peak hurricane season approaches, the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) works year-round to ensure the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway system is ready for whatever comes its way. THEA’s proactive approach to hurricane season and beyond is a core part of the mission to keep the community safe.

This year, THEA completed a series of key initiatives to enhance its readiness. THEA replaced the roofs on all of its facilities and cleared drainage ditches to prevent flooding. THEA staff is also undergoing ongoing emergency response training, ensuring the team is skilled and ready to act when it matters most.

A central part of THEA’s preparedness strategy is its new asset maintenance contract with Webber. This agreement shifts the focus to a more proactive maintenance model, using advanced technologies to keep the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway system in top condition. Crews now use Survey123 for real-time inspections, Robotiz3d ARRES Eye to monitor pavement conditions, and iCone technology to alert motorists of work zones, even during severe weather events.

This new contract isn’t just about repairs; it’s about prevention. By using these cutting-edge tools, THEA can identify and address potential issues before they become hazards. In the event of an emergency, THEA’s team is prepared to respond.

THEA’s dedication to preparedness is a promise to the community. By choosing to be ready instead of just reacting, THEA ensures a smoother and safer journey for everyone.
